Dampers & Actuators

Dampers regulate airflow in ducts, while actuators are the motors or control devices that adjust the damper blades. Together, they control air volume, pressure, and zoning.

The main types include volume control dampers, fire dampers, smoke dampers, and motorised zone dampers. Each serves a different purpose, from balancing airflow to meeting fire safety codes.

Actuators allow dampers to be adjusted automatically based on signals from a building management system (BMS) or thermostat. This ensures optimal comfort, energy efficiency, and system responsiveness.

In Australia, AS 1682 and AS 1668 apply to fire and smoke control dampers. Internationally, UL 555 (fire dampers) and EN 15650 (Europe) are widely used. Compliance depends on whether the damper is for fire safety, smoke control, or air regulation.

Well-maintained dampers and actuators can last 10–20 years. Lifespan depends on operating conditions, cycles of use, and whether regular servicing is performed.

Maintenance involves inspecting damper blades for obstruction, checking actuator calibration, and testing fire/smoke dampers as required by safety regulations. Regular servicing prevents failure and ensures compliance.
