Product FAQs
Rigid ducting is made from sheet metal or pre-insulated panels and is used when high airflow efficiency, minimal leakage, and long service life are required. It is preferred for main trunks, long straight runs, and commercial projects.
Rigid ducts maintain a consistent cross-section, reducing resistance and pressure losses. This leads to lower energy use, less noise, and more consistent airflow compared with flexible ducts.
Rigid ducting must comply with AS 4254.2 in Australia. Internationally, standards include SMACNA (North America), DW/144 (UK), and EN 1507 (Europe), which regulate construction, leakage, and fire safety.
Rigid ducts are commonly made from galvanized steel, aluminium, or pre-insulated phenolic/PIR panels. When properly installed, they can last 25–40 years or more, offering excellent resistance to crushing, UV, and moisture.
Designers calculate duct size based on airflow demand, pressure, and velocity limits. Fittings such as elbows, reducers, and splitters must be selected and fabricated carefully to minimise turbulence and maintain efficiency.
Rigid ducts can be inspected and cleaned more easily than flexible ducts. Regular maintenance involves sealing joints, removing dust buildup, and ensuring insulation remains intact for consistent performance.
